Nomination Guidelines for the Impact Award and Lynn C. O’Donnell Lifetime Achievement Award in Industrial Hygiene

The Board for EHS Credentialing® (BGC®) is accepting nominations and endorsements for the BGC Impact Award and the BGC Lynn C. O’Donnell Lifetime Achievement Award for 2022-2023.

Nominees for a BGC Award must be a BGC Diplomate (Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist-CAIH or Certified Industrial Hygienist-CIH) in good standing or a former Diplomate who voluntarily surrendered the credential while in good standing. The BGC Awards are presented at the BGC Forum, held annually.

 

BGC IMPACT Award

The BGC IMPACT Award is awarded by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC) to a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or a Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist (CAIH) who has made a significant contribution to the practice of occupational and environmental hygiene.

Note: The Nomination and the Endorsement forms are NOT the same. Please make certain you are completing the intended form.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. A nominee for the BGC® IMPACT Award must be a diplomate of BGC® in good standing and must have been a diplomate for less than 20 years.
  2. The project, series of projects, or initiative qualifying the diplomate for nomination must have been ongoing or completed within the past 5 years.
  3. Current BGC® Directors are not eligible.
  4. Past recipients of a BGC® Award are not eligible to receive the same award.
  5. This award is presented annually. Should a suitable individual not be nominated in a particular year, the award will not be granted.
  6. This award will be presented at the BGC Forum. The recipient will be required to submit a professional color head-and-
    shoulders photo within two weeks of notification of receiving the award and is expected to be present at the awards ceremony.
  7. The BGC® IMPACT Award will not be awarded posthumously.

Selection

  1. The BGC® Awards Committee, whose members are appointed by the BGC® Chair, selects finalists for the award. A full Board vote is required to select the recipient from among award finalists.
  2. Nominees will be evaluated against the criteria outlined below.
  3. Each nominee will be evaluated only by the information included in the nomination package.
  4. Nominees are judged by the scope, depth, quality, and impact of their project, series of projects, or initiative in the field of occupational and environmental hygiene.

Complete the nomination package:

  1. Nomination Form: This form must be completed online by a nominator at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2022_Impact_Nominate. Anyone may serve as a nominator for this award. Self-nominations are accepted.
  2. Endorsement Forms (3): Three endorsement forms must be completed online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2022_Impact_Endorse by individuals who are knowledgeable about the nominee’s work, accomplishments, and character, which are the basis for the nomination.
  3. A Curriculum Vitae/resume of the nominee must be submitted by the nominator.

Completed nomination packages consisting of a nomination form, 3 endorsement forms, and a CV/resume are due June 30, 2022, at the links provided above. Incomplete nomination packages, emailed forms, or hardcopy (paper) submissions will not be accepted. Send any questions to: info@GoBGC.org.

Selection Criteria

Recipients of the BGC® Impact Award shall have made a significant contribution to the practice of occupational and environmental hygiene.

The nomination package must demonstrate that the nominee’s accomplishments, work, and contributions resulted in a significant positive impact on the profession. The significant positive impact on the profession is demonstrated through a project, series of projects, or initiative that has been completed or was ongoing within the last 5 years.

Examples include, but are not limited to, the development of new technologies, advancements in the science of occupational and environmental hygiene, and volunteer, probono, service, or committee work that has contributed significantly to the field.

BGC Lifetime Achievement Award

The BGC Lynn C. O’Donnell Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor awarded by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC) for exemplary contributions to the practice of occupational and environmental hygiene that has culminated over a lifetime of work.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. A nominee for the BGC® Lynn C. O’Donnell Lifetime Achievement Award must be a diplomate of BGC® in good standing or a former diplomate who voluntarily surrendered the credential and was in good standing at the time of voluntary surrender and retirement from practice.
  2. A nominee must have been a BGC® Diplomate in good standing for a minimum of 20 years.
  3. Current BGC® Directors are not eligible.
  4. Past recipients are not eligible to receive the same award.
  5. This award is presented annually. Should a suitable individual not be nominated in a particular year, the award will not be granted.
  6. This award will be presented at the BGC Forum. The award recipient will be required to submit a professional color head-and-shoulders photo within two weeks of notification of receiving the award and is expected to be present at the awards ceremony to deliver a presentation. The BGC Board may approve an exception to this requirement in extenuating circumstances.
  7. This award may be granted posthumously; in which case, the recipient’s family or another representative may receive the award. A family member or designee may deliver the presentation.

Recipients of the BGC® Lynn C. O’Donnell Lifetime Achievement Award shall have made exemplary contributions to the practice of occupational and environmental hygiene that have culminated over a lifetime of work. This award is intended to honor those in the profession who have contributed a legacy of service to the profession.

The nomination package must demonstrate that the nominee’s accomplishments, work, and contributions resulted in a significant positive impact on the profession. Outstanding contributions culminating over a lifetime of work must be demonstrated in technical leadership, professional mentorship, and professional service.

Technical Leadership: Demonstrated exemplary accomplishments through one or more of the following categories:

  1. Original research or invention / technological innovation
  2. Advancements in the scientific approach to the recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards
  3. Technical expertise (in one or more areas of occupational and environmental hygiene)
  4. Scientific advancements
  5. Distinguished service/accomplishment in the advancement of occupational and environmental hygiene
  6. Unique technical contributions to the practice of occupational and environmental hygiene
  7. Other impactful technical contributions to the profession

Professional Mentorship: Demonstrated impact in growing early- and mid-career occupational and environmental health professionals.

Professional Service: Demonstrated exemplary service or contributions to technical or professional societies/associations, or to the local community, nation, or the world. Contributions demonstrated through one or more of the following categories:

  1. Public, community, or professional service
  2. Social reform or social responsibility
  3. Influence on public policy or social reform
  4. Interaction with or influence on other scientific disciplines
